Smoothness and performance: Their compact design with single overhead camshaft and long piston stroke gives Mercury FourStroke 40-60 hp outboards more low RPM torque for excellent acceleration even when pushing a heavy load. Large displacement, long stroke, four cylinders, single overhead camshaft ensure optimal power and smooth sailing with Command Thrust models.
Butterfly screw clamp: The 40 hp model with manual start, long shaft (20 in / 508 mm) and tiller steering is also available with a butterfly screw clamp. This clamp reduces the time and effort required to remove/detach the outboard from the boat's transom.
The Big Tiller: The optional centrally mounted Big Tiller offers optimal control. A longer tiller handle integrates a convenient trim button, the gear shift lever is within reach and optional digital trolling control allows lowering the engine speed down to 700 RPM in 10 RPM increments.
Instant starts / energy efficiency: Mercury's Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) ensures reliable instant starts, greater energy efficiency, immediate throttle response and protection against fuel quality issues.
Charging system: A high power 18 amp alternator keeps batteries charged and fishing electronics running.
More control, more power: A 2.33:1 gear ratio with 44% larger gears delivers more thrust. The desmodromic gear shift is ultra-smooth. A lower unit that drops deeper into the water, a propeller with 20% more blade surface and a lower gear ratio provide unmatched thrust, maneuverability and planing.
